Wave Gotik Treffen (WGT) is literally the oldest and biggest gothic festival in the world uniting all the dark scene genres imaginable – gothic metal, EBM, synth pop, viking, folk, industrial and so on. The first attempt (not legal by the way) to make it occurred in 1987 in Potsdam, but the first real official WGT was held in 1992 after Germany’s reunion. Within just a few years the visitors number has increased dramatically: from just 200-300 to 20.000-25.000 people. Traditionally it takes place in Leipzig, Germany and it means WGT’s all throughout the city – there are more than 30 stages to choose from! There are really small clubs, big clubs, large halls, an open-air stage at Barkb?hne in the Clara-Zetkin-Park and of course the biggest headliner stage in Agra Halle with 10.000 people capacity.

Wave Gotik Treffen was started as a music festival but now it’s rather all about a well done attempt to embrace all the gothic subculture at once: music, fashion, literature, fine arts, parties, some experimental art etc. The festival includes incalculable number of various events for all tastes – dress-code S&M-parties, miscellaneous folk-oriented events in Heidnisches Dorf or annual luxurious Victorian Picnic in Clara-Zetkin-Park to name a few. The most expected part of Wave Gotik Treffen is surely band performances. WGT takes usually from 3 up to 4 days and the acts number grows with every year numbering nearly 250 bands and performers now.

Accommodation

WGT takes place in Leipzig and it’s quite a big city with many options. There’s a plenty of hotels and small hostels around and if you’re a camping fan you can stay in the big tent area right in the Agra Park near the biggest WGT stage in the Agra Halle. There are a lot of parking places too. Our tip: if you would like to book a hotel room for the next WGT, do it as early as possible! Usually the festival takes place in May, but already in January you can hardly find a place to stay. Be quick :)

City Transport

As you might know WGT is already kind of a municipal attraction clearly associated with Leipzig-city, so every WGT visitor gets a pleasant welcome bonus for his money – free city transport. When you buy your ticket you get a festival bracelet and you can use any municipal buses or trams free of charge with it during all the festival days.

More Free Stuff?

Sure :) With the WGT festival bracelet you’re allowed to visit many historical and cultural places for free, like concerts, exhibitions and many others. Please check the information in your festival booklet (you’ll get one with your ticket and bracelet).
